Write to Every State. Discover the Country Through Real Learning.

Social studies came to life in our house the day my daughter mailed her first letter to a state tourism office. A few weeks later, maps, brochures, and travel guides arrived with her name on them. She couldn’t wait to open the packet and explore.

The 50 States Discovery Project helps you bring that same experience into your homeschool, with guidance for what to teach along the way.

Your child sends real letters to state tourism offices, watches the mailbox, and uses what arrives alongside books, maps, conversation, and hands on activities to explore all 50 states.

Together, you’ll learn about geography, history, government, economics, and the environment while building reading, writing, research, and independent learning habits.

Each state follows five steps: Discover It, Question It, Investigate It, Understand It, and Capture It. Your child asks questions, explores real resources, explains what they’ve learned, and creates a scrapbook that grows with every discovery.

What’s Inside: 124 Printable Pages

  • The Letter Kit: A unique letterhead for all 50 states with a prepared letter and tourism office address, mailing instructions, an address directory, and a mail tracker.

  • The State Guide: A teaching page for every state with a central topic, essential questions, suggested books and videos, comparison prompts, and scrapbook activities.

  • The Discovery Journal: Two reusable pages to help your child record discoveries, research questions, make connections, and reflect on what they’ve learned.

  • Getting Started Resources: Guidance for using the project, an introduction to the five regions, map skills, and a map to color as you explore.

  • Easy Digital Navigation: Clickable contents and a State Finder so you can go directly to the pages you need.

For ages 8–14. Move at your family’s pace.

Use it as the foundation for your social studies learning throughout the year or alongside other resources you enjoy. Explore with library books and online resources while you wait for the mail. Responses and materials vary by state, so your learning can continue even when a packet doesn’t arrive.
